Smoking/Vaping
Most people started smoking in their teenage years, usually as a result of peer pressure. Over a period of time smoking became a habit – they no longer think about having a cigarette, they just do it.
We all know that smoking is incredibly bad for you – there are health and cancer risks associated with smoking, as well as the ageing effect it has on your body and skin. And of course there is the smelly clothes and breath, the fact that these days you are a social leper and have to stand in your ‘allocated areas’ to have one, plus the ever increasing cost. You may have your own reasons for wanting to stop, and are hoping that hypnotherapy can help you. Well I believe it can, if you genuinely want to give up.
For some, their smoking is a symptom of an underlying anxiety, in which case they can still be helped, but further hypnotherapy sessions may be required to deal with the underlying issue. This would apply to people for whom smoking is more than simply a habit. You could think of is as more of a ‘symptom’ of something else.
Take for example, someone who feels very stressed in their life, or depressed, or feels badly about themselves somehow, and smoking is in some way a ‘symptom’ of that… it becomes a ‘coping’ mechanism.
People who fall into this category usually feel that’s the right way to go for them as soon as they read that description. Now if that’s the case, then it’s far better for us to work together to solve the actual problem, rather than trying to take away your coping mechanism. There are a range of other concerns I can help with – for more information, have a look at the Therapy page.
How can hypnotherapy help?
During a therapy session we will talk about your situation – what made you start, why do you keep smoking, what is stopping you from giving up?
Most people have triggers that they associate with cigarettes, maybe a morning break at work, or after having lunch, or in the evening while watching TV. And because those ‘triggers’ happen, they automatically, unconsciously, reach for a cigarette.
Hypnotherapy can help you to break these associations/triggers, help you to see what is holding you back, that smoking is no longer appropriate or helpful for you in your life now, and help you give up the evil weed for good!
